Say emergency rule in Rivers undemocratic, call for security overhaul

Bala Mohammed-led Forum insists on standing with embattled Rivers Governor

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has declared unwavering support for the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, following the imposition of a six-month suspension and state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu.

Rising from a high-stakes meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, the Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, vowed to back Fubara through what it described as “undemocratic actions” threatening the governance structure of Rivers State.

President Tinubu had earlier imposed a state of emergency on Rivers, citing a deepening political crisis. He subsequently appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the Sole Administrator of the state.

But the PDP governors, in a strongly worded communiqué, condemned the move and pledged solidarity with Fubara.

“We restate our commitment to stand with him (Fubara) until the end amid the challenges posed by the declaration of a state of emergency in his state,” the communiqué read.

The Forum also raised the alarm over the deteriorating security situation across Nigeria, with special reference to Borno, Katsina, and Edo states.

“The Forum finds alarming the worsening security situation in the country,” it stated, demanding a total overhaul of the nation’s security architecture.

The governors urged the Federal Government to rethink its security priorities and adopt a bottom-up strategy that empowers local communities and security outfits to act swiftly and effectively.

They warned that continuous silence and executive overreach risk undermining the country’s democratic principles and further destabilising already fragile states.
