Peter Obi alleges three governors blocked his visits, claiming that some state governors have prevented him from entering their states because of his political ambition. Speaking during an interview with The Sun, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) said the incidents have raised concerns about his constitutional right to move freely across Nigeria.
According to Obi, the governors warned him not to visit their states, although he did not identify the states or the governors involved. He also claimed that he received warnings that his life could be at risk if he ignored the directives.
Furthermore, Obi questioned why any elected official should restrict the movement of a Nigerian citizen. He argued that freedom of movement is guaranteed under the Constitution and should not depend on political affiliation or ambition.
“I have tried to go to about three states, but the governors would say that I shouldn’t come,” Obi said. He added, “The question is: don’t we have freedom of movement in Nigeria? Why would anybody tell me not to come to a state? I have been told that if I come, my life is in danger.”
However, Obi did not provide evidence to support the allegations, and no governor has publicly responded to the claims at the time of reporting.
The allegations come as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of future elections, with concerns over political intolerance and the safety of opposition figures remaining subjects of national debate. Peter Obi alleges three governors blocked his visits, a claim that is likely to generate further reactions from political stakeholders and civil society groups.
