Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the ₦15.8 trillion fuel subsidy savings and more than $100 billion in loans obtained since he assumed office in May 2023.
Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, made the demand in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday.
He also urged Tinubu to visit more states across the country and engage directly with Nigerians about their economic challenges.
Obi congratulated the president on spending a night in Akwa Ibom State. However, he challenged him to visit the remaining states and explain how his administration had used public funds.
He asked the president to account for the ₦15.8 trillion saved from fuel subsidy removal, the loans obtained, increased tax revenues and additional government earnings. Obi also demanded figures showing how many Nigerians had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres the government had built.
Furthermore, he questioned improvements in electricity supply and the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity.
He recalled Tinubu’s promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if his administration failed to fix electricity.
Obi said Nigerians deserved explanations about how the government had spent the resources entrusted to it.
He added that the country needed accountability, transparency and measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.
The NDC candidate said these principles would guide the new Nigeria his political movement seeks to build.
