Peter Obi says Nigeria’s World Cup absence reflects leadership failure

|By Adejumo Adekunle – Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has argued that Nigeria’s World Cup absence reflects leadership failure rather than a shortage of talent.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Obi said the country continues to produce world-class athletes and entertainers. However, he stressed that poor leadership has prevented many young Nigerians from reaching their full potential.

According to him, the 2026 FIFA World Cup showcased Nigerian excellence despite the country’s absence from the tournament. He pointed to the performances of Nigerian artists and players of Nigerian descent representing other nations.

Obi said Nigeria’s World Cup absence reflects leadership failure because political leaders have not created the right environment for talent development.

He also praised music star Davido for drawing global attention to insecurity in Nigeria during the competition. The singer appeared in a custom black leather jacket carrying the message “Bring Them Home” and the names of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oyo State.

Obi said Davido used his international platform to highlight a national crisis beyond entertainment. Furthermore, he noted that Nigeria’s security challenges require both local and international attention.

Despite the country’s difficulties, Obi expressed optimism about the future. He maintained that effective leadership, investment in young people and deliberate policies could unlock Nigeria’s vast potential.

According to him, Nigeria’s World Cup absence reflects leadership failure, but the country can still reverse the trend and build a more productive future for its citizens.
