The untimely death of Eli Ugwu, a famous senior lawyer from Enugu State, purportedly caused by police agents, has left the Nsukka community in deep mourning.
The unfortunate occurrence occurred in Kogi State, shortly after Uguw satisfied the kidnappers’ demands and gained his cousin’s freedom.
Initially, it was believed that Eli had succumbed to the kidnappers’ violence despite complying with their demands.
However, a contradicting account, according to The Sun, says that he was fatally shot by police officers due to a mistaken identity.
As he and his cousin emerged from the brush, the cops accidentally opened fire, killing Eli immediately.
Fortunately, his cousin, the previous abduction victim, is currently receiving medical treatment and showing signs of improvement.
This terrible episode serves as a somber reminder of the perils that both kidnapped victims and those who heroically intervene to secure their release face.
“He had already provided the ransom and was about to leave with the victim when cops opened fire on them. Eli was shot and killed instantaneously, but his cousin, the kidnap victim, is responding to therapy, according to a lawyer who spoke on condition of anonymity to journalists.
The Kogi State Police Command has yet to provide an official comment on the ambiguous circumstances surrounding Ugwu’s death, leaving many concerns unanswered.
Ugwu was claimed to be a highly respected member of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Nsukka branch.
