By Babatunji Wusu| The Edo State Police Command has arrested social media influencer Uzebor Emmanuel, widely known as “Aza Woman,” over viral online posts alleging a series of kidnappings in parts of Benin City.
According to a statement issued by the command, the influencer claimed that about six people were abducted through mini transport buses operating in the Aduwawa and Ikpoba Hill areas. The posts further alleged that some victims escaped from their captors, while others secured their release after paying ransom.
However, police investigations reportedly found the claims to be untrue. The command said preliminary findings showed that the information circulated online was false and misleading, creating unnecessary fear among residents and raising concerns about public safety.
The police noted that the reports spread quickly across social media platforms, generating anxiety and potentially damaging public confidence in the state’s security efforts. Authorities warned that the circulation of unverified security information could trigger panic and distract law enforcement agencies from responding to genuine emergencies.
In the statement, the command stressed that spreading false reports relating to public safety is a serious offence with significant consequences.
“The security of a state should never be jeopardized for views, engagement, online relevance, or any other form of social media gratification,” the statement said.
The Edo Police Command also cautioned social media users against sharing unverified claims, particularly those capable of disturbing public peace and order. It urged residents to seek information from credible and official sources before reposting or amplifying reports online.
Authorities confirmed that Uzebor Emmanuel remains under investigation and will face prosecution once inquiries are completed.
The case highlights growing concerns over misinformation on social media and its potential impact on public security, especially when false reports involve sensitive issues such as kidnapping and violent crime.
