Babatunji Wusu –
During a raid on his palace at Anwai in Asaba, the Department of State Services (DSS) agents apprehended Obi Nduka Elunor, a well-known Delta High Chief.
On Thursday night, Elunor and roughly seven of his men were taken into custody on charges of unlawful firearm possession and land racketeering; the remaining men managed to flee into the jungle.
The Punch claims that during the course of the hours-long raid, DSS agents discovered firearms and other potentially incriminating materials at the palace.
Elunor was detained, according to a source who spoke with the newspaper, in response to a petition that some of his neighbors had filed accusing him of “land grabbing” on Ugwu-Nwosu land, which is close to Asaba, the state capital.
“The DSS invited Obi Elunor to their office,” the source stated. Over twenty operatives broke into the Obi’s palace as he was leaving for the DSS headquarters.
“AK-47 rifles and other items were found there; some of his men were taken into custody and others managed to get away.”
When the DSS went to Asagba Palace to discuss the matter, Asagba said he hadn’t sent Obi Elunor.
“I am aware that Obi Nduka Elunor has previously, in an effort to scare people away from the land, evicted some suspected IPOB members who were using the land as a hideout during operations. He also put up a board with the inscription ‘Asagba of Asaba’ on the said land.”
When he met with DSS officials on Friday night, a senior state civil servant who wished to remain anonymous informed them that the case was still being looked into and that they could not release the suspect on bond.
He claimed, “I really don’t know anything about his arrest; I just wanted to see if I could help.”
The event was confirmed by a senior DSS officer who asked to remain anonymous. He stated that Elunor will either be released on bail or the case would be turned over to the police for additional investigation.
