Ipswich Town secured their first Premier League victory of the season on Sunday, earning a well-deserved 2-1 win away at Tottenham Hotspur. The promoted side took the lead with two first-half goals and held firm in the second half despite Spurs’ efforts to mount a comeback.
Ipswich opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a spectacular overhead kick from Sammie Szmodics, much to the delight of the Blues’ fans in attendance, including pop star and Ipswich supporter Ed Sheeran. Just before halftime, Ipswich doubled their advantage when Liam Delap pounced on a rebound after Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario parried a low cross from Szmodics. Delap’s instinctive finish gave Ipswich a 2-0 lead going into the break.
Tottenham came out strong in the second half and created several opportunities. Captain Son Heung-min saw his curling shot acrobatically tipped over the bar by Ipswich keeper Arijanet Muric. Spurs thought they had halved the deficit moments later when Dominic Solanke’s close-range strike found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for a handball in the build-up.
Despite further efforts from Son and Solanke, including shots that went over the bar, Ipswich’s defense remained resolute. Tottenham finally got on the scoresheet in the 69th minute when Rodrigo Bentancur powered home a header from a Pedro Porro corner.
Spurs brought on midfielders Yves Bissouma and James Maddison in search of an equalizer, but Ipswich, under the leadership of manager Kieran McKenna, held strong to secure their first league win of the season. The victory lifted Ipswich to 17th in the Premier League standings with 8 points, while Tottenham remained in 10th place with 16 points.
The win also marked Ipswich’s first Premier League victory since April 2002, and the away fans celebrated the historic achievement, while Tottenham’s supporters expressed their frustration with boos at the final whistle.
