President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, to further engage the South African authorities on “appropriate measures” the later will take to end the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

The President, in the wake of the xenophobic attacks had sent Amb. Ahmed Rufai Abubakar as his Special Envoy to South Africa, to convey a Special Message to his counterpart, President Cyril Ramaphosa. He has also given approval for the immediate voluntary evacuation of all Nigerians who are willing to return to Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, he stated that, “The deep concern of President Buhari and Nigerians is basically about the intermittent violence against Nigerians and their property/business interests in South Africa and how they are in good conditions wherever they are”.

 The President gave the directive upon receiving the report of the special envoy he sent to President Cyril Ramaphosa last week to register Nigeria’s concerns over the attacks. 

In a statement today, the 9th of September, the Presidency said the special envoy who is the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai-Abubakar, returned to Nigeria after the assignment and has however submitted his report to President Buhari already.
