Real Madrid overcame a goal deficit to defeat Real Sociedad 2-1 on Sunday, helping the home team reclaim first place in La Liga with its fifth straight victory.
The team led by Carlo Ancelotti kept up its unblemished league record to finish with 15 points, two more than Barcelona in second place after their 5-0 thrashing of Betis on Saturday.
After just five minutes, Real Sociedad took the lead when former Madrid star Take Kubo connected with Ander Barrenetxea in the middle of the box to score at the second attempt despite keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s outstanding save.
In the first few seconds of the second half, Federico Valverde equalized the score with a powerful effort from the edge of the box that struck the left post and went in for his first career goal.
“Trying was the best thing we did. They had numerous opportunities, and they took advantage of their first one to score,” Valverde told the club’s official media.
“But we never gave up, and the goal at the opening of the second half gave us motivation to keep going. I’m happy to contribute in any way I can.
In the 60th minute, Joselu gave the home team the lead with a spectacular header off of a left-wing cross from Fran Garcia.
Any team in the league may damage you; we need to make amends because we gave up a goal very early, according to summer acquisition Joselu.
But because it was at the Bernabeu (Stadium), our supporters helped us turn things around.”What makes me the happiest are the goals I score and the points I help the team get.
On Wednesday, Real Madrid will host Union Berlin to begin its Champions League campaign before traveling to Atletico Madrid for the league matchup.
