The House of Representatives has declared its intention to push for the dismissal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), if he does not cease what they perceive as attempts to undermine the Dangote Refinery.
Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson for the House, made this statement while addressing journalists in Abuja on Saturday. Agbese emphasized that lawmakers have already called for the removal of the leadership of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), expressing concern that both the NNPCL and NMDPRA might be working to sabotage the Dangote Refinery.
Agbese noted that although many Nigerians have canceled their planned protests due to widespread hardships, they remain firm in their demand for Kyari’s removal to ensure the refinery’s smooth operation and its contribution to the nation’s economy.
He also highlighted that the House plans to investigate the ongoing conflict between the Dangote Refinery and the NMDPRA.
“We have observed numerous attempts to discredit the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has caused significant concern and panic across the country,” Agbese said. “The House directed the President to remove the NMDPRA’s CEO, and we will not hesitate to call for Mele Kyari’s removal if the efforts to undermine this vital national asset do not cease immediately.”
Earlier, Naija News reported that Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, recently led a delegation to visit the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Company in Lagos. During the visit, Abbas noted that the insights gained would inform the House’s legislative actions and strategies.
