Babatunji Wusu –
After a holiday overseas, Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential contender in 2023 and former vice president, has returned to Nigeria.
Following several weeks away from the nation, Atiku arrived back in Abuja early on Tuesday.
Atiku reportedly came back to the nation in order to attend the highly anticipated Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
As the party’s nominee for president in the most recent elections, Atiku is considered the de-facto leader of the organization and is anticipated to chair more sessions prior to the NEC meeting.
Recall that after more than a year of refusal to conduct the meeting, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) scheduled the NEC meeting for April 18.
According to the party constitution, the NEC, which is the second most powerful decision-making body within the organization after the NWC, is required to convene every quarter.
It is expected that the NEC meeting will address a number of urgent issues that have impeded the party’s progress and unity since the general elections in 2023.
The party’s leadership dynamics will be discussed, as well as the resolution of ongoing internal strife and the possibility of disciplinary action against members involved in anti-party activity.
There are several rumors that the NEC will settle complaints, including those of specific members—such as the FCT Minister—who publicly stated that they would not be supporting Atiku in the polls, leading to demands for responsibility.
