Police operatives have cordoned off the premises of the Rivers State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) amid ongoing leadership tussles. The development follows a State High Court injunction in Port Harcourt, restraining Aaron Chukwuemeka and his executive team from functioning as the party’s leadership.
In response to the court ruling, supporters of Governor Siminialayi Fubara convened an emergency congress on Wednesday, appointing a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs. At the congress, Hon. Nname Robinson Ewor, Rivers West Senatorial Vice Chairman and Governing Council Chairman of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, emerged as the acting chairman.
Ewor, along with the newly constituted executive team, has been tasked with stabilizing the party, which has been grappling with internal strife. The group pledged to assume control of the PDP office immediately.
However, by Thursday afternoon, heavily armed police officers were stationed at the party’s secretariat along the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway to prevent a potential clash. The officers, arriving in over four patrol vans, restricted access to the premises, forcing the new leadership to relocate their meeting to a temporary venue.
Party stakeholders emphasized their commitment to resolving internal disputes and restoring order, while the caretaker committee is expected to steer the party until proper congresses are held.
