Rivers political violence must have no place in the state’s democratic process, governorship candidate Angel Lawson has said, as political parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
Mr Lawson, who is contesting the Rivers State governorship election on the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), called on political leaders, candidates, supporters and citizens to reject violence, threats and intimidation.
He said every registered political party and candidate should be able to participate in lawful political activities without fear.
According to him, disagreements over political views should not lead to threats, coercion or disruption of political activities.
Mr Lawson said politics should focus on competing ideas, policies and programmes rather than violence or intimidation.
He also called on relevant security and law enforcement agencies to investigate credible allegations of threats, intimidation, disruption and violence.
The ADP candidate urged political leaders and their supporters to work together to maintain a peaceful political environment in Rivers State.
He said candidates seeking public office should persuade voters through their policies, programmes, vision and records.
“Those who disagree politically should respond with better ideas,” Mr Lawson said.
He also urged political actors to respect the rights of citizens to participate in the democratic process.
The statement comes as political activities gradually build towards the 2027 elections. Mr Lawson said Rivers residents should be able to attend political meetings, support candidates and participate in campaigns without intimidation.
He further called for voters to have the opportunity to assess candidates and make their choices freely.
Rivers political violence has remained a concern in discussions about political participation, particularly where allegations of threats or disruption arise. Mr Lawson said such allegations should be handled through lawful investigations by the appropriate authorities.
He urged political parties and candidates to promote issue-based campaigns and respect democratic rules.
“Let us reject political violence and embrace peaceful, issue-based politics founded on respect, tolerance and democratic values,” he said.
Mr Lawson concluded with the message: “One Rivers. One People. One Future.”
