Robert Lewandowski is preparing for a fresh challenge after completing his move to Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer (MLS). The 37-year-old striker has signed a two-year contract and said he is excited to begin a new stage in his career after leaving Barcelona at the end of his contract in May.
Speaking at his unveiling on Tuesday, Lewandowski explained that he never considered joining another European club. “I couldn’t imagine myself with a different club besides Barcelona, so that’s why we knew that the next step would be outside of Europe, and of course, it’s not easy to move from Europe to the USA, but we are very excited,” he said. “But of course, our lives are changing, but it’s a new experience.”
The Robert Lewandowski MLS move follows an outstanding spell at Barcelona, where he scored 119 goals in 192 appearances. During his four seasons with the Spanish giants, he helped the club win three La Liga titles, including this season’s championship, as well as the Copa del Rey.
Lewandowski also boasts an exceptional international career with Poland, making a record 167 appearances and scoring 89 goals, making him the country’s all-time leading scorer.
The Robert Lewandowski MLS signing is expected to strengthen Chicago Fire’s push for success. The club currently sits third in the Eastern Conference, and Lewandowski could make his debut when the team hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday.
Head coach Gregg Berhalter described the signing as a major boost, saying Lewandowski has the quality to transform the club’s ambitions. He is expected to partner league top scorer Hugo Cuypers, who has already netted 13 goals this season.
The Robert Lewandowski MLS arrival gives Chicago Fire fresh hope of competing for major honours as the season resumes.
