KURSK, RUSSIA — Russian officials say a fire has been extinguished at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant after a Ukrainian drone crashed into a transformer, causing damage but no casualties. Radiation levels reportedly remained normal.
The plant’s official Telegram account confirmed that the drone detonated on impact. Russian air defenses intercepted the device before it could inflict greater damage.
The United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint around nuclear facilities amid the ongoing war.
The incident coincides with Ukraine’s Independence Day, marking 32 years since the country declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Servicemen raised the national flag in central Kyiv as celebrations commenced.
The UK is showing solidarity: Ukrainian flags will fly above Downing Street on Sunday, while Defence Secretary John Healey said Britain is “ramping up” support for Ukraine. British military experts will continue training Ukrainian forces under Operation Interflex through at least the end of 2026.
Meanwhile, fighting continues on the ground. Russia claims its forces seized two villages in the Donetsk region on Saturday. Russian troops control roughly 20% of Ukraine’s territory, advancing slowly and at significant cost.
Diplomatic efforts have intensified this month. U.S. President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on 15 August to discuss a possible peace deal. Despite both leaders calling the talks successful, Trump has expressed frustration over the lack of progress and hinted at additional sanctions against Russia.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to push for an unconditional ceasefire. He accused Russia of blocking efforts to hold a summit with Putin, a claim echoed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said a meeting would occur only when the agenda is “ready,” accusing Zelensky of rejecting proposals.
The ongoing tensions underscore the fragility of diplomacy as Ukraine commemorates its independence amid
active conflict.
