The Senate on Tuesday confirmed two nominees for the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC) as submitted by President Bola Tinubu, while a third nominee, Professor Fatima Alkali, declined her appointment.
The confirmation followed the presentation of the report by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
Confirmed by the Senate were Prof. Dakas C.J. Dakas (North Central), who will serve as Chairman, and Dr. Uchenna Okolocha (South-South), who was appointed as Commissioner.
However, Adegbonmire told lawmakers that Fatima Alkali, the nominee from the North-East, communicated her rejection of the appointment to the presidency before the screening exercise.
“On Wednesday, 25th June 2025, two of the nominees appeared before the committee. The third, Professor Fatima Alkali, turned down the appointment,” he said.
The committee recommended that Alkali be replaced with another female nominee from the North-East to ensure gender balance in the commission.
According to the report, the confirmed nominees were found to possess the required qualifications, experience, and integrity to serve in their respective roles. No petitions or adverse reports were received against them.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the motion to a voice vote, which was unanimously adopted.
He congratulated the confirmed appointees and expressed confidence in their ability to strengthen the legal and justice system in the country.
