Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has condemned the reported killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader, Muammar Gaddafi, describing the incident as a tragic reflection of Libya’s prolonged instability.
Sani made the remark in a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, reacting to reports that Saif al-Islam was assassinated in Zintan, a western Libyan city where he had lived for about a decade.
Expressing concern over Saif al-Islam’s return to Libya, the former senator said he had earlier questioned the safety of such a move given the country’s volatile security situation.
“When I read some time ago that Gaddafi’s son was returning to Libya, I wondered how safe that decision was,” Sani stated.
He added that the reported assassination underscored the depth of violence and tragedy in Libya, noting that accounts from victims of human trafficking trapped in the country paint a grim picture of lawlessness and human suffering.
“The assassination of Saif al-Islam is tragic and unfortunate. Even the testimony of victims of human trafficking trapped in Libya tells everything about the tragedy and violence in that country. Adieu Saif,” he wrote.
