Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has accused global powers of manipulating international law to protect their interests while punishing weaker nations.
Sani made the assertion on Sunday via his verified X account, arguing that international law is enforced mainly against poor and militarily weak countries, particularly those without nuclear capability.
According to him, powerful nations and their allies routinely sidestep global legal frameworks, even as they invade, occupy and dispossess other states without consequences. He further alleged that such powers intimidate judges of international courts and trample on national sovereignty with little or no accountability.
Sani’s comments followed reports of a United States military operation in Venezuela, which he claimed led to the arrest and removal of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. He cited the incident as another example of what he described as unchecked dominance by superpowers.
“International law is made for poor or weak countries; it’s law for those countries without nuclear weapons. Superpowers and their cronies are insulated from that international law,” Sani wrote.
His remarks have reignited debate on the credibility, fairness and enforcement of international law in global politics.
