Spain secured football’s biggest prize and a record financial reward after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final in New Jersey on Sunday.

A late Ferran Torres strike in the second half of extra time gave La Roja their second World Cup title and earned them the highest prize money ever awarded to a tournament winner.

Luis de la Fuente’s side will take home $50 million (₦76.5 billion) along with the famous World Cup trophy, marking the largest payment ever received by a World Cup champion.

Argentina, who finished as runners-up, will receive $33 million (₦50.5 billion) after falling short in their bid to defend the title. England claimed third place and will collect $29 million (₦44.4 billion), while France will earn $27 million (₦41.3 billion) after finishing fourth.

Teams eliminated earlier in the competition will also receive substantial payments, with quarter-finalists earning $19 million (₦29.1 billion) and sides knocked out in the group stage still receiving $9 million (₦13.8 billion).

The increased rewards show the huge financial importance of the FIFA World Cup, where teams are rewarded based on their progress throughout the tournament.
