According to the BBC, street harassment will result in jail terms of up to two years, according to UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Although it is already against the law to harass someone on the street in the UK, creating a new offense for it is thought to encourage more victims to report it to the police.

“All women should feel comfortable using our streets. The requirements of the victims are at the center of our decision, therefore the criminals who carry out these atrocities will suffer the penalties they merit, according to Braverman.

Two-thirds of women did not feel secure going alone at night, at least occasionally, according to a BBC survey released in March.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the poll found that women under 34 are most likely to be the victims of sexual offenses but are also the least likely to report them (CPS).

Greg Clark, a former business secretary, pushed for legislation to prohibit harassment on the street, and the government is about to approve that.

According to Clark, it’s “to reinforce a change in the society that establishes that mistreating women in public is wholly unacceptable.”

“Public sexual harassment can harm men and boys, but we should be clear that it disproportionately affects women and girls,” Clark said during a discussion in the House of Commons.

In its current form, the law will also enact harsher punishments by raising the maximum term from six months to two years.
