Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has accused political sycophants of misleading former President Muhammadu Buhari while he was in power — and abandoning him immediately after he left office.
Speaking at the 2nd Raymond Dokpesi Diamond Lecture hosted by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in Abuja on Saturday, Sule said he personally witnessed politicians excessively praise Buhari to his face, only to disown him later.
“I have seen people sit before President Buhari saying, ‘You are the best ever,’ but the minute he left government, they began calling him one of the worst presidents. These are the same people — but different moments. That is what sycophancy is all about,” he stated.
Sule warned that political flattery poses a real danger to governance, stressing that it often prevents leaders from receiving honest feedback.
He also paid tribute to the late Chief Raymond Dokpesi, praising his audacity to establish Nigeria’s first private radio and television stations at a time when military regimes tightly controlled the media space.
According to the governor, Dokpesi’s legacy remains a powerful reminder of media freedom and courage in the face of state suppression.
