…Madugu hails team’s commitment and fitness ahead of crucial WAFCON clash
…Nigeria eye 10th title as they battle South Africa for a spot in the final
Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has declared that his squad is fully prepared for their highly anticipated semi-final clash with South Africa’s Banyana Banyana at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca.
The Nigerian side, nine-time champions of the continental tournament, will face the reigning titleholders on Tuesday in what promises to be a fiery contest for a place in the final.
Nigeria heads into the encounter on the back of a dominant 5–0 quarter-final victory over the Copper Queens of Zambia. Following that emphatic performance, the team took a short break but returned to training on Sunday with renewed focus and intensity.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Madugu praised the players’ mental and physical readiness.
“The preparations are good. The girls have been very committed and determined. They are in good shape and well prepared,” the coach said.
He added that the team is focused on the immediate task of reaching the final and reclaiming the continental title.
The last time both teams met in a WAFCON final, South Africa edged Nigeria on penalties in a dramatic finale. Tuesday’s encounter presents the Super Falcons with a chance for redemption and another shot at continental glory.
