-WAFCON 2024: Tunisian star wary of Nigeria’s firepower
-Nigeria boasts elite squad ahead of opening clash in Casablanca
Tunisian striker Mariem Houij has admitted that Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be a formidable force when both sides meet in their opening match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) this Sunday in Casablanca.
The 30-year-old forward, speaking to CAFonline, said her team faces an uphill battle against the nine-time African champions, who are widely regarded as the most successful women’s national team on the continent.
“Nigeria is the most decorated team in the WAFCON. In the last edition, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by the host nation, Morocco,” Houij stated, acknowledging the Super Falcons’ rich history and elite talent.
Led by coach Justine Madugu, Nigeria heads into the tournament with a star-studded lineup, including six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala; Atlético Madrid’s dynamic forward Rasheedat Ajibade; Leicester City defender Ashleigh Plumptre; and experienced attacker Francisca Ordega.
Tunisia, who are looking to improve on their previous WAFCON outings, understand the scale of the challenge but remain hopeful of making a statement in their Group A opener.
The clash is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the tournament’s opening round, with Casablanca ready to host a showdown between a determined Tunisian side and a Nigerian team eager to reclaim continental glory.
