When Manchester United visits Real Sociedad in LaLiga on Thursday, manager Erik ten Hag stated his team understands how to defeat the LaLiga team by a score of two goals or more to take first place in their Europa League group.
Last week, United defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 at home to guarantee their position in the knockout rounds. However, to move ahead of the Spanish team in Group E rankings, they must defeat them by more than one goal.
Obviously, Ten Hag said at a news conference on Wednesday, “(winning the group) is crucial.
“We are aware of what we must accomplish: a two-goal victory. But winning every game is necessary to take home the trophy, therefore we must do that.
In group stage games, United has won four and lost one, a 1-0 home defeat to Sociedad in September.
According to Ten Hag, “it (was) about six weeks ago, and it’s a different team (than the opposite match).”
“We’re progressing well, expanding, and increasing. We are aware that winning games is challenging here, but we enjoy the challenge. We have a strategy in place and will stop at nothing to achieve our target of a two-goal victory.
They want to play, and I believe they will stick to it, and I believe their coach enjoys lyrical football. We will adjust if the strategy changes, but we are prepared.
If the strategy doesn’t work, United will play one of the eight teams that finished third in their respective Champions League groups in a two-legged playoff in February.
Due to illness and injury, Ten Hag’s team was without wingers Jadon Sancho and Antony, as well as Anthony Martial, who has been sidelined for three weeks with an injury.
“Martial still needs to complete his recovery, which is ongoing. We’re moving in the right way because he worked out this morning, the coach continued.
