There is palpable tension in the Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State’s Ughoton Community following reports that vigilante operatives there killed an unnamed Ijaw boy.
According to sources, the bloody incident took place in Ughoton on Saturday when men acting as community vigilantes allegedly shot and killed an Ijaw kid.
According to reports, the suspected Ijaw youngster was slain when he refused to “settle” with the vigilantes at Ughoton Community after being caught with crude oil goods that were allegedly diverted illegally from a pipeline via Ughoton while en route to the upland for delivery.
One of the sources alleged that the Ughoton vigilante leader organized the group to travel to the nearby Ijaw hamlet and kill the man, whose wife was said to have recently given birth.
The corpse of the deceased was embalmed and taken to the home of the father of the chairman of the Ughoton Community vigilante, according to information further acquired by some enraged youngsters in the aforementioned Ijaw community who were outraged by the murder of one of their own.
According to reports, several Ughoton inhabitants fled their homes as a result of rumors that angry teenagers from the Ijaw colony “were gearing up for violence.”
As of the time this report was filed, DSP Bright Edafe, the police public relations officer for Delta State Command, could not be reached for comments on the event.
