Following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022, the government of the United Kingdom reports that almost £162 million was spent on her state burial and related ceremonies.
This was declared by the finance minister, John Glen, in a letter to the legislature on May 18, 2023. On September 19, hundreds of foreign heads of state and royals attended the grandiose state burial for Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.
This came after days of nonstop lines of tens of thousands of people waiting to see her casket at the UK parliaments in London and Edinburgh necessitated expensive logistical and security procedures.
Glen reported that the overall anticipated cost was £161.7 million, with the interior ministry, which is in charge of policing, being accountable for the largest share (£73.7 million). The Scottish government was charged £18.8 million, while the Department for Culture, Media & Sport spent £57.4 million.
