Brigadier General Gambo Mohammed, the Brigade Commander of 23 Brigade in Yola, Adamawa State, has provided an explanation for the recent attack on the state police command headquarters by soldiers. In response to the initial reports by the police that their headquarters was assaulted by Nigerian Army personnel and that an Inspector was killed during the incident, General Mohammed clarified the sequence of events.
According to SP Suleiman Nguroje, the spokesperson for the police in Adamawa State, the clash between the police and military officers erupted at Target Junction in the capital city of Yola. In a statement released to the press, Nguroje stated that the Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Babatola, condemned the conflict and ordered an immediate investigation into the matter to restore peace and ensure justice.
Contrary to the police’s claims, Brigadier General Mohammed revealed that the police actually initiated the altercation by shooting at the soldiers stationed at a checkpoint. The soldiers were responding to a fellow soldier who had sustained gunshot wounds. General Mohammed stated that the police had hidden the injured soldier, and when the soldiers attempted to rescue him, they too came under fire. As a result, the soldiers were forced to retaliate in self-defense. However, he assured the public that the situation has now been resolved and everything is back to normal.
It is expected that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the underlying causes of the conflict and prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
