Babatunji Wusu –
Ambassador Desmond Akawor, the immediate past chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, has said the PDP made a mistake by fielding Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
When Atiku visited the state during his campaign, he publicly said that the Rivers State chapter of the party was dissatisfied with the zoning structure.
This was revealed by Akawor when chatting with Punch.
He argued that the PDP’s blunder in nominating Atiku as its presidential candidate was the reason it lost the election.
To find its bearing, the PDP chieftain stated that the party must return to the source of the crisis.
“My advice to them is that if you make a mistake on your journey, return to the junction where you made the mistake and take your bearing,” he says. They committed a blunder. while Wazirin Adamawa came here while he was traveling about, it is on video, after his brief to us, I freely told him I said, ‘Sir, I know you very well, I served under you as a minister and you did well in the economic reform under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Telecommunication, this, this, this…you did an excellent job, sir.
“However, there is a problem in our party today.” The issue is that we in Rivers State, and I speak on behalf of the Rivers people, have a problem. We are disappointed that the party has abandoned our zoning system.’ Dino Melaye rose to defend himself. I recall his defense, but I believe I have made my point. So, where did we end up? You can see where we are right now. As a result, the party must return to the crossroads and reorient itself. That is the single piece of advise I have for the national party.
We voted for a Southern President because that is what we believed in, and I informed Waziri Adamawa when he arrived to our party secretariat that we are disappointed that the party has abandoned the zoning policy.
