And the Academy Award nomination goes to…

On January 24, actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced the nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards live from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The winners of the 95th Academy Awards will be announced live on ABC on March 12 with host Jimmy Kimmel.

Rihanna for “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Austin Butler for Elvis, and Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All at Once are among the first-time nominees.

Several previous Oscar winners, including Brad Pitt, Viola Davis, Tom Hanks, and others, were left off the list amid the surprise nominations, such as Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie and Stephanie Hsu for EEAAO.

With 11 nominations, Everything Everywhere All At Once from directors The Daniels—Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert—leads the pack.

Voting for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will then begin on March 2 and continue until March 7.

As the big night approaches on March 12, here are the omissions and surprises among the 2023 Academy Award nominees:

SURPRISE: Andrea Riseborough, To Leslie

A last-minute bid from her A-list peers has landed Riseborough her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her work in To Leslie.

SURPRISE: Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once

While it comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen EEAAO, Hsu has been notably absent from most award shows this season—but that is no longer the case with her Best Supporting Actress nomination.

SNUB: Viola Davis/Lashana Lynch, The Woman King

Davis received several nominations for her role in The Woman King this awards season, but she and co-star Lynch were both snubbed from the 2023 Oscars, as was the film itself.

SNUB: Taylor Swift, Where the Crawdads Sing

Swift’s “Carolina” may have won Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and Hollywood Music in Media Awards this year, but she is not nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars.

SNUB: Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, Babylon

Despite receiving nominations at other awards shows this season, neither Pitt nor Robbie were recognized for their roles in Damien Chazelle’s ode to old Hollywood.

SNUB: Tom Hanks, Elvis

While co-star Austin Butler, who played Elvis Presley, received a nomination, Hanks was not nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Colonel Tom Parker.

SURPRISE: Paul Mescal, Aftersun

Charlotte Wells’ drama proved to be a star vehicle for Mescal, who received his first Best Actor nomination.

SNUB: Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick

While he remains nominated as a producer as a result of the sequel’s Best Picture nomination, Cruise fell just short of receiving his own acting nomination.

SURPRISE: The Sea Beast

The Netflix film is up against Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Turning Red for Best Animated Feature Film.
