The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has spoken out against President Bola Tinubu’s newly enacted Student Loan Bill, claiming that it has the potential to drive many students out of school.
In an interview with Daily Trust, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke stated that the bill may have a negative impact on millions of potential students who rely on tuition-free higher education institutions to obtain information.
“You want to introduce tuition fees in a country where more than 133 million people live below the poverty line?” he says. It will have the opposite effect.
The majority of students whose parents cannot afford it will withdraw from school in rage, and you know what that means: they will fiht the society back. But first, let us gather the right information before deciding on the next measures,” he continued.
