Fubara Agrees to Finish Term Without Seeking Reelection in 2027

President Bola Tinubu has agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as Governor of Rivers State, on the condition that he will not seek a second term in the 2027 elections, according to The Cable.

The agreement was reached during a closed-door meeting held Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where President Tinubu met with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, suspended Speaker Martin Amaewhule, and a few state lawmakers.

Insiders at the presidency revealed that the truce was designed to restore political stability and democratic order in the oil-rich state, which has been embroiled in a protracted crisis between Fubara and his estranged political godfather, Wike.

A senior source familiar with the talks told The Cable that Fubara would be reinstated to complete his four-year term but must forgo any ambition for a second tenure in 2027 — a significant concession from the embattled governor.

“He has agreed not to seek re-election, and that was one of the key terms President Tinubu insisted on,” the source disclosed.

As part of the compromise, the source added that Wike will be allowed to nominate all local government chairpersons across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state, thereby securing his political stronghold at the grassroots level.

This arrangement is expected to ease tensions and reposition the political architecture of Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections, giving both camps room to operate without direct confrontation.

Although official confirmation is still pending, the deal has stirred fresh discussions about the balance of power in Rivers and Tinubu’s growing influence as a national arbitrator in intra-party conflicts.
