President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector General of Police, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.
Multiple senior police officials and sources within the Police Service Commission confirmed the development on Tuesday, disclosing that the President personally directed Egbetokun to prepare his handover notes following a meeting at the Presidential Villa.
According to insiders, Egbetokun was at the Villa on Monday, where he received formal notice of his removal. A senior source revealed that he had already concluded arrangements to transfer authority.
“He was told to go and prepare his handover notes. I believe he has done that already and he will be handing over,” the source stated.
The President has appointed Tunji Disu, currently serving as Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, as the new Inspector General of Police.
Disu, who oversees operations at the FCID Annex in Lagos, is expected to assume office immediately, signaling a significant leadership transition within the country’s top law enforcement institution.
The sudden change in leadership is poised to reshape command structure and operational direction within the Nigeria Police Force, as stakeholders await an official statement from the Presidency and the Police Service Commission.
