Global Afrobeats star, Tiwa Savage, has dismissed claims that the genre is experiencing its worst performance in 20 years, insisting that Afrobeats is instead dominating global charts and filling stadiums across continents.
Her reaction comes after top music executives, including Paulo Okoye and DJ Big N, recently warned in interviews and social media posts that Afrobeats was losing momentum.
Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Savage countered the narrative emphatically, asserting that the genre is still on a meteoric rise. “Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world,” she declared, stressing that the movement thrived despite growing without structure, investment or industry belief from its early years.
Savage, who grew up in London, recalled once feeling embarrassed to identify as African but said Afrobeats has now reshaped global perception of the continent. “We are filling out stadiums, and we are getting the biggest songs on the charts right now,” she said, dismissing talks of Afrobeats’ decline as misinformation.
She affirmed that the genre’s cultural influence runs deeper than temporary fame. “There was a conversation at one point that Afrobeats would have its 15 minutes of fame and fade away. But we are still here. We are not slowing down… As much as they are trying to quiet us down, the music is not going anywhere. We are Africans and we are unstoppable.”
