Toke Makinwa blasts claims Nigerian women are materialistic, arguing that relationships have always involved exchange rather than being driven solely by money. Speaking on the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the Nollywood actress said many Nigerian men rely on wealth instead of building genuine emotional connections.

According to Makinwa, the perception that women are overly materialistic has grown because some men believe money is their strongest attraction. She argued that this behaviour encourages women to place greater value on financial benefits in relationships.

Furthermore, Makinwa said relationships have been transactional throughout history, dating back to biblical times. She maintained that many men introduce money into relationships first, shaping expectations before genuine bonds develop.

Her remarks have sparked fresh debate online over love, gender roles and modern dating.
