Brentford put up a brave display at the Etihad Stadium to beat the defending Premier League (PL) champions 2-1, ending Manchester City’s 11-game home winning streak.
Brentford was the superior team in the opening exchanges despite the skill gap, and the Bees were rewarded for their efforts before the 20-minute mark. Ivan Toney demonstrated his muscle by leaping above the City defense to head home the opening goal and shock the Etihad fans after the ball was flicked on from a free-kick. As the half came to a close, City increased its pressure on the Londoners in an effort to recover parity.
When the ball went to Phil Foden in stoppage time following a corner kick, the pressure finally paid off. The winger slammed his effort into the roof of the net to tie the score at halftime.
After the break, the Blues made an effort to snatch a victory in an effort to retake first place in the Premier League. The Brentford defense, though, was difficult to penetrate and retreated farther and more into their own penalty area as the half went on. As they drilled the Bees’ defense, the defending Premier League winners appeared to be at a loss for words.
Pep Guardiola’s team left themselves open at the back and was overthrown in the final seconds, despite the hosts spending a remarkable 10 minutes of stoppage time searching for the victor. Ivan Toney scored a last-second goal for Brentford on a brilliant counterattack, snatching the victory for the Bees and setting off loud celebrations among the visiting supporters behind the net.
In if Arsenal wins before the FIFA World Cup break, Brentford’s thrilling away victory may put City up to five points behind the Gunners.
