In the meantime, an automobile accident on Saturday along the Calabar-Itu highway in Cross River State resulted in five fatalities and eleven injuries.
A Nissan Caravan with the registration number GWB532XY and a Mark Truck with no registration number collided at approximately 3 p.m.
Speeding was the cause of the disaster, according to a statement released on Sunday by Matthew Olonisaye, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Akwa Ibom Command.
As per the declaration endorsed by Mr. Paul James, the Public Enlightenment Officer of the command, the mishap may have been prevented had the drivers adhered to safety regulations.
“On Saturday, December 2, 2023, at about 1510hrs, a fatal crash occurred along the Itu-Calabar Road by Ayadehe,” the statement stated.
“A Nissan Caravan with registration number GWB532XY and a Mark Truck with NO registration number were involved in the collision.
“There were eleven males and five females involved. Three of the five females and two of the eleven males were confirmed deceased, and the other eleven male and female occupants suffered varying degrees of injuries.
FRSC personnel mobilized and dispatched to the scene as soon as they received the incident report. When emergency personnel arrived at the crash scene, they transported the injured to adjacent hospitals so they could receive immediate medical care, and the bodies of the deceased were placed in the morgue.
When the reason of the crash was investigated, it was discovered that eyewitness reports indicated speed was the primary contributing factor. Following the victims’ departure, the road’s debris was removed to allow for unhindered traffic passage.
In particular, the sector commander warned drivers against speeding, turning in the wrong direction, and irresponsible parking.
He reminded passengers not to ignore drivers who break traffic laws and underlined the importance of drivers being aware of their surroundings.
