On Tuesday, Manchester United officially announced Cristiano Ronaldo’s mutual decision to leave the team. Following a public outburst against the team and manager Erik Ten Hag, the Portuguese player’s future with the club was on the verge of termination.

The announcement of the confirmation came two days before Portugal’s opening World Cup match against Ghana in Qatar.

The statement from the club read, “The club appreciates him for his enormous contribution over two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 games, and wishes him and his family the best for the future.”

Regarding the team’s goals beyond the star forward, the statement noted that “everyone at Manchester United remains focused on maintaining the team’s growth under Erik ten Hag and working together to bring success on the pitch.”

Ronaldo, 37, signed a two-year contract to return to United from Juventus last year. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has fallen out of favor with new manager Ten Hag after a successful first season. Throughout the season, the two have had a public argument, with Ronaldo receiving a suspension from the team after refusing to use a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur.

In a TalkTV interview, Ronaldo claimed, “I think he did it on purpose. “I felt angry. He doesn’t treat me with respect, so I don’t respect him.

“I believe the club planned for me to respond that way,” he continued. “I was really, extremely, extremely, extremely dissatisfied with Manchester United’s message.

“To be honest, I never had a problem with any team or coach, therefore I thought their three-day suspension was excessive.”

The £500,000 weekly value of Ronaldo’s contract was slated to expire in July of the following year.
