Manchester City defeated defending champion Real Madrid 4-0 on Wednesday to go to the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons (5-1 on aggregate).

Against the 14-time European champion, Bernardo Silva’s two goals in the first half gave City the upper hand. An own goal by Eder Militao after the break and a late fourth from Julian Alvarez clinched the victory for Pep Guardiola’s team, which avenged last year’s heartbreaking semifinal defeat.

After losing to Chelsea two years ago, Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour will now be a heavy favorite to finally deliver the trophy he has wanted since purchasing the club in 2008. Inter Milan will be waiting in the final.

Since Portuguese midfielder Silva beat Thibaut Courtois with a shot in the 23rd minute and then headed in his team’s second in the 37th minute, City has gone undefeated in 26 home games in the competition.

Real, the current champion looking to win the trophy for the sixth time in ten years, was outplayed by a tenacious City team edging closer to a treble in the second half.

After Kevin De Bruyne’s free kick off Militao in the 76th minute, Carlo Ancelotti’s team was unable to recover.

Alvarez, a late replacement for Erling Haaland, added the cherry on top of a special evening for City with a precise finish.
