UEFA announced on Thursday that it had begun an inquiry into “possible unacceptable behavior” by Republic of Ireland players who sang a song mentioning the IRA after the team qualified for the first women’s World Cup.

After Ireland’s 1-0 playoff victory over Scotland on Tuesday, a video of the game showed the team screaming in support of the Irish Republican Army, a paramilitary group that fought to abolish British authority in Northern Ireland.

Vera Pauw, the manager of Ireland, and the FAI of the nation extended their regret for the situation.

The player’s devastation was described by Pauw, who also said that the person who posted the video was “sobbing in her room because she injured people and she never meant to.”

“We did something that caused harm to others, and the fact that we had no malicious intent is no defense. We weren’t rejoicing for any reason, Pauw stated.

We shouldn’t have done it, and we won’t do it again. It’s wrong.
