UK Reaffirms Visa Rules for Nigeria, 32 African Countries

The United Kingdom has confirmed that UK visa requirement rules remain in place for citizens of Nigeria and 32 other African countries. The updated guidance from the Home Office makes it clear that eligible travellers must obtain entry clearance before they travel to or pass through the UK. The UK visa requirement also applies to many passengers making connecting flights through British airports, depending on their travel plans.

According to the revised immigration guidance, people from more than 100 countries and territories must still secure a visa before entering the UK, unless they qualify for a recognised exemption. The Home Office also stated that stateless people and those travelling with documents other than officially recognised national passports or identity cards must receive entry clearance before departure.

The latest update encourages travellers to check their UK visa requirement status before booking flights. Those who fail to meet the entry conditions could face delays, travel disruption or even refusal to board by airlines.

The United Kingdom remains a leading destination for many African visitors. Thousands travel each year for higher education, business travel, tourism and family visits. Officials explained that the revised guidance supports the country’s ongoing border management efforts, strengthens immigration controls and promotes compliance with existing laws.

The African countries still covered by the UK visa requirement are Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
