The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, who died at the age of 74. In response to his passing, Qatar declared a four-day national mourning period beginning on Monday. During this period, government ministries and public institutions will suspend work, while national flags will fly at half-mast across the country.

Nigeria’s condolence message was delivered through a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa. On behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended heartfelt sympathies to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, the Al Thani family and the people of Qatar. The statement described Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani as a visionary leader whose service from 1995 to 2013 transformed and modernised the Gulf nation.

The government praised his commitment to national development, international cooperation and regional progress, noting that his leadership left a lasting mark on Qatar and beyond. Nigeria also reaffirmed its solidarity with the Qatari people during this difficult period and prayed for eternal rest for the late leader, as well as strength and comfort for his family and the nation.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is widely recognised as one of the key architects of modern Qatar, helping to shape the country’s rapid economic growth and strengthen its influence on the global stage during his years in office.
