The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has approved the appointment of Prof. Princewill Chike as its 10th substantive vice-chancellor, marking a new chapter in the institution’s leadership.
The decision was ratified by the university’s Governing Council following the completion of a selection process conducted in line with relevant laws guiding the appointment of vice-chancellors in Nigerian universities. Prof. Princewill Chike is expected to officially assume office on July 13, when the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, comes to an end.
Announcing the development, the university’s spokesperson, Sam Kpenu, said the appointment followed a rigorous and transparent process overseen by specially constituted committees. According to him, the exercise complied fully with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act.
He explained that a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board were established to manage the recruitment process and ensure that all procedures were strictly followed.
The Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor, Mao Ohuabunwa, congratulated Prof. Princewill Chike on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the institution to greater heights.
According to Ohuabunwa, the new vice-chancellor possesses the experience, leadership qualities and vision needed to strengthen the university’s reputation and sustain its culture of academic excellence.
Before this appointment, Prof. Princewill Chike served as Commissioner for Health in Rivers State during the administration of former governor Nyesom Wike.
The appointment of Prof. Princewill Chike is expected to usher in a new phase of growth and development for UNIPORT, one of Nigeria’s leading federal universities.
