Folarin Balogun and Chris Richards scored their first international goals, both off assists from Gio Reyna, as the United States defeated Canada 2-0 on Sunday night to win the CONCACAF Nations League for the second time in a row.
Richards scored on a corner kick in the 12th minute, and Balogun, who made his debut in Thursday’s 3-0 triumph over Mexico after opting to play the US over England, extended the lead in the 34th.
Interim coach B.J. Callaghan, who took over on May 30 and will also manage the squad at the CONCACAF Gold Cup starting next weekend, guided the Americans once more. Gregg Berhalter will not be on the sidelines until September exhibition games after being reinstated as coach on Friday, 5 1/2 months after his contract was let to expire.
While the United States continued its 22-game home winning streak over Canada dating back to 1957, Canada was still without a championship since the 2000 Gold Cup.
Reyna initiated both of the goals before leaving with a calf injury at halftime and was replaced by Luca de a Torre. Reyna’s lack of initiative during World Cup training and his family’s enraged reaction sparked the scandal that led to Berhalter’s dismissal in January.
Richards scored his first goal in 10 international appearances when Reyna’s corner kick found an unmarked Richards, who bounced a header from 7 yards to the left of goalkeeper Milan Borjan.
Since Jordan Morris’ goal against El Salvador on June 14 of last year, the Americans hadn’t scored off a corner kick. After Weston McKennie’s original shot was saved, de La Torre crossed to Morris.
Balogun’s second goal was assisted by Reyna. With his right arm, the forward managed to fend off Scott Kennedy and slip past Borjan.
Callaghan made three adjustments from Thursday, replacing Weston McKennie and Sergio Dest, who were both suspended after receiving red cards against El Tri, with central defense Walker Zimmerman, midfielder Brendon Aaronson, and right back Joe Scally.
