In order to overcome a three-goal deficit against Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday, PSV Eindhoven will need to play at its best of the season, coach Ruud van Nistelrooy cautioned on the eve of the second leg match.
PSV has a mountain to climb in the return leg at the Philips Stadium if it wants to get back into contention after losing the first leg of its knockout stage playoff 3-0 in Spain last week.
Sevilla scored immediately before halftime and added two more goals quickly to complete an easy victory, but Van Nistelrooy claimed he was encouraged by PSV’s first-half performance.
“It is the best mark we’ve hit so far this year. The next step is to continue doing it. On Sevilla, we want to apply pressure. We have no other choice tomorrow,” the former Dutch international striker, who missed Sunday’s Eredivisie encounter between PSV and Utrecht due to sickness, remarked.
“What I refer to as development is getting back up to the level. especially when there are five to six young players, ages 19 to 23, involved. At that level, mistakes are promptly penalized. Although that is upsetting and disheartening, how you handle it teaches you valuable lessons. You have to learn things as a team, too,” he said on Wednesday during a press conference.
With the possibility of being eliminated from European club play and a six-point league deficit to league-leading Feyenoord, PSV will still be in a tough situation. This will be Van Nistelrooy’s first season in command.
The 46-year-old said, “Even after selling our most crucial players, I said that we are adhering to our aims, but the likelihood of fulfilling your goals is obviously lower.
In January, the club sold Noni Madueke to Chelsea and Cody Gakpo to Liverpool. Everyone is aware of the events and reasons surrounding the transfer window. Yet, we continue working with the young boys and will help them grow. That is the aim. Van Nistelrooy continued, “At the conclusion of the season, we’ll see where we stand.
