The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has delivered a blunt message to Nigeria’s political class, declaring that no group can claim opposition status without proving its strength at the ballot box.
Wike issued the challenge on Friday during a strategic visit to the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wadata House in Abuja, where he met with members of the party’s newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC).
In a strongly worded address, the former Rivers State governor dismissed what he described as “paper opposition,” insisting that political credibility must be earned through electoral victories—not media statements or coalition talks.
“You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election. Those who claim to be leading the opposition have not won anything,” Wike declared.
He stressed that electoral success remains the only true test of political relevance in a functioning democracy, warning that rhetoric without results weakens the integrity of opposition politics.
Beyond the criticism, Wike used the visit to reaffirm his loyalty to the PDP leadership, pledging unwavering support as the party rebuilds from internal crises.
“My coming here is to reassure you of my support. I am fully committed to the National Working Committee,” he said.
Acknowledging the party’s recent turbulence, Wike noted that the PDP is gradually stabilising but must sustain deliberate efforts to restore unity.
“Yes, we have had crisis, but we are coming out of it. It will take sacrifice and hard work to move forward,” he added.
He further urged the leadership to aggressively pursue reconciliation, particularly by reaching out to aggrieved members who exited the party, noting that many are still willing to return if properly engaged.
“Reach out to them. Many are concerned about opportunities, including tickets. You know what to do,” he advised.
Wike also exuded confidence in the party’s legal and political battles, citing recent victories at the Federal High Court of Nigeria and the Court of Appeal Nigeria as signs of resilience.
“We have defeated them in court. The same God will see us through. Stay focused and work as a team,” he charged.
Responding, PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, assured that the new leadership is committed to repositioning the party and regaining public trust ahead of future elections.
