Defending champions Arsenal have successfully navigated a tense London derby to reach the Women’s Champions League semifinals, despite falling 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Having secured a commanding 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg, the Gunners progressed with a 3-2 aggregate score. This hard-fought advancement keeps Arsenal on track to defend their European crown, setting up a highly anticipated semifinal clash against either Wolfsburg or Lyonnes.
The second leg on Wednesday was a high-stakes affair from the opening whistle. Chelsea dominated much of the possession, fueled by the return of star forward Sam Kerr, who had missed the previous encounter while representing Australia at the Asian Cup. The Blues relentlessly pressured the Arsenal backline, but the visitors remained disciplined. A late breakthrough finally came in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Sjoeke Nüsken fired home from close range, sparking a frantic finale.
The closing moments were filled with incredible drama. Chelsea nearly leveled the aggregate score when Veerle Buurman’s strike rattled the post, and Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar pulled off a spectacular save to deny another Nüsken header. Amidst the chaos, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor was shown a red card in the dying seconds following a heated protest over a non-call involving a hair-pull on winger Alyssa Thompson. Bompastor’s frustration boiled over post-match as she questioned the effectiveness of VAR in the women’s game.
Despite the narrow loss on the night, the Azzurri-like resilience of the Gunners proved enough to see them through. With the domestic heavyweights of English football clashing on the European stage, Arsenal’s ability to absorb pressure and protect their first-leg lead has once again proven why they are the team to beat in this year’s tournament.
Do you believe the current VAR implementation in the Women’s Champions League is consistent enough to handle high-stakes rivalry matches?
Bayern Munich Stun Manchester United with Late Comeback

Bayern Munich staged a dramatic late rally on Wednesday to secure their place in the Women’s Champions League semifinals, defeating Manchester United 2-1. Entering the second leg with a narrow 3-2 lead from their victory at Old Trafford, the German giants progressed with a 5-3 aggregate score. The victory marks a significant milestone for the Bavarian side, as they reach the final four of Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 2021.
The match began in favor of the visitors, with Manchester United making an impressive debut in the quarterfinal stage. The Red Devils dominated the opening half and silenced the home crowd after just 11 minutes. French forward Melvine Malard capitalized on a rare mistake by Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic, slotting the ball into an empty net to level the aggregate score at 3-3. For much of the game, United’s resilient defense, anchored by American goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, successfully frustrated the German powerhouse’s relentless attacks.
However, the tide turned in a frantic three-minute window late in the second half. The comeback began in the 81st minute when Glódís Viggósdóttir rose highest to power home a header from a corner kick. Before United could catch their breath, Linda Dallmann doubled the lead, firing a clinical strike from inside the penalty area following yet another set-piece delivery. The quick-fire double effectively ended United’s European dreams and confirmed Bayern’s dominance.
Bayern Munich now look forward to a massive semifinal clash against the winner of the all-Spanish quarterfinal between Barcelona and Real Madrid. With the remaining fixtures set for Thursday, including Wolfsburg’s trip to Lyon, the race for European glory is reaching a fever pitch.
Do you believe Manchester United’s lack of experience at this level was the main reason they couldn’t hold onto their early lead?
