The NBA has officially levied a $100,000 fine against the Portland Trail Blazers following an investigation into the team’s scouting of Chinese center Yang Hansen. The league determined that the franchise breached strict protocols regarding contact with players who were not yet eligible for the draft. The violation dates back to December 2023, nearly two years before the 7-foot-1 prospect was officially selected.

In addition to the financial penalty, the league has handed down two-week suspensions without pay to assistant general managers Sergi Oliva and Mike Schmitz. Both executives were found to have violated league rules governing predraft contact. The Trail Blazers released a statement confirming that they self-reported the incident once it was brought to their attention and have cooperated fully with the NBA’s investigation. “The team accepts the league’s determination,” the franchise noted, signaling their intent to move past the administrative blunder.

Despite the controversy surrounding his acquisition, Yang Hansen has become a notable part of the Blazers’ rotation. After being selected 16th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies and subsequently traded to Portland, the rookie has appeared in 41 games this season. While his current averages of 2.3 points and 1.6 rebounds per game are modest, he remains a significant developmental piece for the organization, even earning a spot in the 2026 Rising Stars game.

This disciplinary action comes at a transformative time for the organization. On Monday, the NBA Board of Governors approved the landmark sale of the Trail Blazers from the estate of the late Paul Allen to a group led by billionaire investor Tom Dundon. The $4.25 billion deal marks a new era for the franchise, as the team looks to stabilize its front office and focus on its promising young core on the court.

Do you think the NBA’s rules on international scouting are too restrictive, or are they necessary to maintain a fair playing field for all teams?
