England manager Thomas Tuchel has sent shockwaves through the football world by confirming that Phil Foden is not a guaranteed selection for the upcoming World Cup. Despite being a standout performer for Manchester City, the 25-year-old playmaker faces an uncertain future with the Three Lions following a disappointing run of friendly matches at Wembley Stadium. England struggled during their final training camp, falling 1-0 to Japan on Tuesday after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Uruguay last Friday.
Tuchel experimented heavily with Foden’s role during these matches, deploying him as a traditional number 10 against Uruguay and then testing him as a “false nine” against Japan. While the German tactician praised Foden’s attitude and work ethic behind the scenes, he was candid about the player’s lack of impact during live play. “Phil Foden was excellent in camp,” Tuchel remarked, “but he struggles to show it on the pitch.” When asked directly if the midfielder was a lock for the tournament, the coach added bluntly, “It’s not a guarantee that he will come.”
The pressure isn’t only on Foden; Cole Palmer also failed to leave a lasting impression during Tuesday’s defeat, further complicating the selection process. With Jude Bellingham and the rising Morgan Rogers providing stiff competition in the attacking midfield slots, both Foden and Palmer now face an anxious wait to see if they will “make the plane” for the summer finals.
As the deadline for the final squad announcement approaches, the debate over England’s creative core has intensified. Tuchel’s comments suggest that reputation alone will not secure a place in his tactical setup, leaving several high-profile stars fighting for their international careers in the coming weeks.
If you were in Thomas Tuchel’s shoes, would you prioritize Phil Foden’s proven club talent or opt for players who are currently showing better form in the national jersey?
