Tunji Wusu –
According to Eugene Manji, the state’s NLC chapter chairman, the strike by Plateau civil servants will stop if the government pays the remainder of their February and March salaries.
On May 11, Plateau government employees went on an indefinite strike because the administration had not complied with their requests, which included the payment of salaries and other rights.
If the government complies with their requests, the workers may resume work, according to Mr. Manji, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“We requested that the administration of previous Governor Simon Lalong pay civil servants who had not yet received their February salaries as well as pay arrears from their March payments, but it did not.
We believe that government is a continuum and that this government came in and asked that we allow it time to examine our demands.
After verifying the real civil service worker strength, it eventually agreed to pay.
“We will meet with the workers and discuss the prospect of stopping the strike if, following the verification, we find that the employer is willing and committed to paying.
We are keeping an eye on the screening process, which got underway on Tuesday, and will call a meeting if our members start getting the bank credit warnings the government promised.
The government had assured, according to Mr. Manji, that the verification would take place simultaneously with the payment.
He said to NAN that the NLC was aware that Governor Caleb Mutfwang had been given permission by the House of Assembly to get a facility and pay off the backlog of salary arrears.
“We want to give the government a chance and start working again after the one-month arrears are paid in the hopes that it will pay for the remaining months.
We would have no choice but to resume the industrial action should the government back out, Mr. Manji said.
